Reap What You Sow The more humans hand over to nature, the more she requires. Take the farmer who, loosening his grip on the nature of his livestock, allows his pigs to reproduce.  He is then saddled not only with many more pigs to harvest (and hopefully profit by), but with a few sows.  He knows that the butcher’s knife must harvest the sows before old age does.  Nature has upped the ante.  She is testing his metal and his palette. She knows that adolescent pigs, as opposed to sows, are smaller and leaner.  She knows that they are easier to process and to cook, and that our farmer’s buyers are accustomed to them.  Isn’t it enough that he has chosen the narrow path of rotational foraging and organic feed? “Oh no” says Nature.  ”You say you are committed to nose-to-tail cookery.  Do you know what is between the nose and tail of a mature sow? Solid fat scarcely interrupted by a few slivers of meat.  Now take and eat!” In this way, our farmer is stretched and in the end he will find that, not incidentally, nature requires much from those to whom she gives the most. Market Music

The Burren Boys (named after a region in western Ireland) bring together musical influences from Ireland, Brittany, the Balkans, and a a bit of rock ’n roll. They show up with a variety of instruments – fiddle, whistles, low whistles, bouzouki, banjo, guitar, bodhran, djembe and bass – and play traditional and original tunes. They have also been known to favor their listeners with occasional songs sung in Irish as well as English. Listen to some audio samples here.

Their arrangements weave together traditional and modern influences, and range from full-tilt reels and jigs to airs and quieter sets. When they play ceilis, everyone gets up to dance.

The lads have shared the stage with such Celtic notables as Kila, Setanta and Cathy Ryan (of Cherish the Ladies), and have played for folk festivals, dances, and pubs around the Pacific Northwest.

Knitting Demonstration

In honor of the Senior Center “Stitchin’ for a Kitchen” event, Cathleen’s Hands will be demonstrating the Magic Loop knitting method. We will have some cable needles and yarn available for you to try the technique–or bring your own. Demonstrations at 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 1:00 pm.

Through the cooperation of local farms, CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training) programs offer interns and other farm workers/students the opportunity to get to know their farming community and augment their agricultural education beyond their primary farm. In turn, farmers [...]]]> The First CRAFT will be held this year at Plum Forest!

What is it? Through the cooperation of local farms, CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training) programs offer interns and other farm workers/students the opportunity to get to know their farming community and augment their agricultural education beyond their primary farm. In turn, farmers help to inspire, train, and recruit new farmers. (And a group of eager and energetic workers to help with a larger-scale project for an afternoon.)

So how does it work? CRAFT members, typically farm workers, apprentices, and other interested students, meet once a month at a host farm for a visit, workshop, and discussion focused on a topic of the host’s choosing. Potential topics can include dairy goats, greenhouse operations, business planning — whatever the host farmer would like to share with the greater community. In exchange, the students assist the host farm in a work party during the second half of the gathering, and we all get to strengthen our agricultural community.

Rob and Joanne will be talking about Drip Irrigation this year as well as providing hands on learning how to set up, repair and create new lines on the farm. Learning the how and when to water your crops is key to farming and Drip Irrigation is one means that we will be learning about for efficient use of water. This should be a very informative and helpful afternoon for anyone interested in small scale farming.

Be sure to bring hats, gloves, boots and clothes to work in, hope to see you there!

Thorne and Shout:  Maine transplants, Link Harjung and Sofia Albam play an esoteric mix of original and traditional music with an emphasis on country harmony and vocally-driven arrangements. Their influences range from Appalachian folk, to Will Oldham, to Tuvan throat singing, to world mythology.
